Road trips are a great way to spend some time. If you have a spare weekend and you want to treat your family to something enjoyable, then a road trip is likely to be one of the best ways to do so. Of course, there might be a few things stopping you from doing this – one of them is safety, undoubtedly, and for many another is likely to be money. It can seem that a road trip will probably cost a lot of money, but the truth is that it does not have to. In this post, we are going to look at some of the ways in which you can save more money on your next road trip, and so enjoy it all the more.

Hiring Versus Taking Your Own

It often surprises people to hear this, but the truth is that hiring a car is often a cheaper way to go than to take your own car. This can especially be the case if you are planning on taking a road trip in a foreign country, as the cost of transporting your own car all that way can easily outweigh simply hiring one when you’re there. These days you can easily find many examples of cheap car hire, so there is no real reason not to at least consider this if you want to save a little money and still enjoy your road trip abroad. You might even find it is more enjoyable, what with being able to drive a different car to your own and so varying the experience a little.

Plan A Route & Stick To It

While there is something enjoyable about going off the beaten track a little, it is definitely financially more sensible to plan a route which you intend to take and then stick to it. When you have a specific route planned out, you can much more easily save money, because you’re not going to be going all over the place and wasting fuel along the way. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you can’t make any deviations at all, but you should seriously consider trying to stick to a route at least as much as you can. It really will help you to save a lot of money.

Find Some Cheap Accommodation

If your road trip is to be longer than a day, you will want to find a creative and cheap way to spend the night somewhere. The good news here is that you can choose pretty much any decent stopping point along the way, and stop wherever is best. But once again, the simple act of a little forward planning is likely to make a huge difference to how cheaply you can get all this done. As long as you plan ahead, you can probably find cheap accommodation which you can take full advantage of. Or if you really want to get down and dirty with the road trip experience, you could even pack some warm things and sleep in the vehicle.
