Overview
Maruti Suzuki India Limited, a subsidiary of the Suzuki automobile company of Japan was established in 1981. Since its inception, the cars produced by the company gained immense consumer appreciation and broke records as far as its sales are concerned. Its domineering presence on the Indian roads has been such that no other brand came even within the sniffing distance of its astonishing sales trajectory. During the second quarter of 2014, the company had managed to capture around 42.19 percent of the total automobile market in India by selling around 2,41,812 units (out of the industry total of 5,73,038 units) – as per data gleaned from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). According to the Society, the company boasts of having a total of 5 models among the overall top 10 selling models during Q2 of 2014. These top five selling Maruti cars are – Alto, Dzire, Swift, Wagon R and Celerio.
Maruti Suzuki Alto
This compact hatchback registered sales of 64,573 units during Q2 of 2014, a jump from 56,335 units during the similar period of last year. The car comes in both petrol and CNG variants wherein, there are 7 trim models in the petrol segment and 3 in the CNG segment. The petrol run trims cost in the range of Rs. 2.6 lakhs to Rs.3.5 lakhs (Ex Showroom, Delhi) and the CNG run trims fall into the price bracket of Rs.3.3 lakhs to Rs.3.7 lakhs (Ex Showroom, Delhi) respectively. Maruti Suzuki Alto petrol run trim models carry a 796cc 47.3bhp petrol engine mated to a 5 speed manual transmission gearbox. These trims churn out a healthy mileage of 22.7kmpl. On the other hand, the CNG run trims carry a 796cc 47.3bhp CNG power train that churns out a healthy mileage of 30.5km/kg.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
This compact sedan comes second in the pecking order and had registered sales of 50,951 units in Q2 of 2014 as against 49,259 units during the similar period of the previous year. The sedan comes in 4 trim models in both diesel and petrol fuel options. The diesel run variants cost in the range of Rs.6.2 lakhs to Rs.7.6 lakhs (Ex Showroom, Delhi) and carry 1248cc 74bhp 1.3 litres DDiS diesel mills under their hoods. This engine churns out a mileage of 23.4kmpl and is mated to a 5 speed manual transmission gearbox. The petrol run trims on the other hand, cost in the range of Rs.5.1 lakhs to Rs.6.5 lakhs (Ex Showroom, Delhi) and run on 1197cc 85.8bhp 1.3 litre K series engines delivering a mileage of 19.1kmpl.
Maruti Suzuki Swift
This compact hatchback had notched up sales of 47,442 units during Q2 of 2014 as opposed to 48,120 units in the previous period. Boasting of 4 petrol and 3 diesel run trims, Swift costs Rs.5.8 lakhs to Rs.7.2 lakhs (Ex-Showroom, Delhi – diesel) and Rs. 4.6 lakhs to Rs.6.2 lakhs (Ex Showroom, Delhi – petrol). The diesel powered trims carry a 1.3 litres 1248cc CRDi diesel mill that garners a mileage of 25.2kmpl. The petrol powered trims on the other hand, carry an 1197cc 1.2 litre K series petrol mill delivering 20.4kmpl of mileage.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Features are quite good as compare to other cars in this range. This hatchback sold 38,156 units during Q1 of 2014 and comes in a number of fuel options – petrol, LPG, CNG and diesel (upcoming). This vehicle falls in the price range of Rs.3.7 lakhs to Rs. 5.5 lakhs (Ex Showroom, Delhi) across all the trim segments. It also boasts of 5 petrol trims, 1 each in LPG and CNG and 1 trim in the upcoming diesel fuel option. The petrol run engine of Wagon R churns out a mileage of 20.5kmpl, whereas the LPG and CNG run trims garner mileages of 14.6km/kg and 26.6km/kg respectively.
