2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Price, Range, Design, Specs

The F-150 SVT Lightning was a sporty truck that remained under production for more than two generations and died in 2004. Ford decided to relaunch the Lightning nameplate last year, but this time they swapped the powerful V8 engine with an all-electric powertrain delivering a maximum of 300 miles range. The good news is that all the new Lightning’s advanced features come with an affordable price tag. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning price starts at just $39,974 (excluding destination fee) before the federal tax credit.

Another great thing about the 2022 Lightning is its design similarity with its gas-powered F-150 truck, albeit it offers two battery options. The 98.0-kWh Standard-Range battery (SR) should be able to deliver 230 miles after a full charge, whereas the bigger 131.0-kWh Extended-Range pack (ER) should be suitable for 300 miles range.

Although both batteries have different horsepower ratings, the torque remains the same, which is 775 pound-feet (1,051 newton-meters). If that’s not impressive, the all-electric F-150 is capable of powering your home for up to 72 hours.

As Sporty As the Namesake Traditional Truck

The overhyped Lightning name had to undergo some dispute at the start, as we witnessed with the Mach-E when the American automaker said it would be a part of the Mustang family. While the gas-powered Lightning of the past was ideal for exceptional performance, offering lower and toughened suspension, RWD, and a robust V8, the new all-electric Lightning assumes a typical stance same as the standard F-150. However, it doesn’t mean the electric powertrain is any less than the supercharged V8. In fact, it delivers more power and torque than any combustion-engine F-150 Ford ever produced, and it does not pose any Ford F-150 PCM failure symptoms.

Ford claims the Extended Range model can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in around 4.5 seconds, making it the quickest pickup truck on the market. However, the Tesla Cybertruck and GMC Hummer EV can beat this acceleration figure easily (once available).
Whatever model you get after paying the total 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning price, it will come with a standard all-wheel drive and an independent rear suspension, which is first for the F150 truck. The lower center of gravity and updated suspension make it capable of conquering an autocross as well as a drag strip.

To aid in maintaining performance, Ford installed a liquid cooling system. It sustains battery temperatures to boost efficiency. The battery cells hide in a metal structure fixed inside the frame rails for strength and defense against deformation.

A robust steel underbody plate is also there to enhance protection and tidy up aerodynamics to some degree. In the meantime, the inboard-fixed electric motors and aluminum suspension parts minimize unsprung mass and offer a superior guard from hindrances than single wheel-fixed motors do. Having said that, Ford is considering additional powertrains, likely tri- or quad-motor setups.

Towing Capacity

Ford’s electric pickup is not all about power. For the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning price of $39,974, you can tow 5,000 pounds or 7,700 pounds by opting optional package with a payload ranking of 2,000 pounds.

For an extra dough, the ER is capable of hauling approximately 10,000 pounds, albeit its payload capacity falls to 1,850. It is because this pickup’s platform comes with a maximum gross vehicle weight rating (signifying collective weight and payload) of 7,150 pounds. Being bigger than the SR, the ER’s battery is definitely heftier.

Charging

Recharging an electric vehicle always comes with a compromise over the gasoline filling at a fuel station. You can recharge the Lightning on a regular mobile charger with the SR offering a 120-volt, 12-amp model that can add 3 miles per hour. On the other hand, the ER receives a 240V, 32-amp version replenishing 21 miles per hour.

Additionally, a 48-amp home charging station for the SR lets you juice up from 15 to 100 percent in 10 hours. In contrast, the ER’s 19.2-kilowatt home charging station takes 2 hours less than the SR. Those seeking fast charging can benefit from a 150 kW DC quick charge, which is slightly sluggish than the recent electric models available for consumers. However, it is still worthy, recharging from 15 to 80 percent in 41 minutes.

Similar to the Mustang Mach-E, the electric F-150 can benefit from the FordPass charging network, which the automaker claims are the biggest in the region. The Ford app lets you preset the battery or plan charging for off-peak hours. A real-time payload checker enables you to observe through the infotainment system or phone application and aids in adjusting the charging path according to the truck’s load, trailer weight, weather circumstances, landscape, and other irregularities.

Cabin Facilities

On the inside, the electric Lariat and Platinum models receive a 15.5-inch touchscreen and Sync 4A infotainment – the same as we find in the Mustang Mach-E. The vertical screen lets you toggle between different settings and shows the last opened application at the bottom of the display, making it effortless to switch between often-used functions.

Furthermore, the Sync 4A connects to the FordPass application, thus synchronizing the information on the smartphone. It would let you operate different functions such as warming, cooling, opening/closing frunk, charging, and other settings, among many.

Moreover, the 2022 F-150 Lightning comes with an in-built Wi-Fi modem for the wireless internet, allowing over-the-air updates. It ensures the truck remains trouble-free and up-to-date all the time.

Gladly, Ford also offers the new BlueCruise hands-free highway driving assistant to buyers, letting the zero-emission truck steer, brake, and accelerate on specific roads, thus eliminating hassle and tiredness, especially on long journeys.

Pro Power Onboard

Pay the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning price and get a Pro Power Onboard system. Although it is the same system we find in the gas-powered F-150, Ford has upsized its capacity from 7.2-kW to a robust 9.6 kW. The most exciting thing about this tech is the truck’s ability to power your home.

As you plug your truck into your home’s charger and the light disappears, the electric power mechanically outflows from the vehicle to give power to your home. For this, your premises must have an AC-DC inverter and the available Charge Station Pro home charger. This feature is convenient for owners living in places prone to harsh conditions, allowing them to receive power for up to 72 hours.

At some point, Ford will offer Intelligent Power, permitting recharging overnight when electricity cost is low and feeding the power to your house during the expensive, peak-energy time to assist in keeping overall expenses low.

The Pro Power Onboard includes one 240V and four 120V outlets in the bed. Besides, the Mega Power frunk has four 120V outlets and two USB chargers. The American vehicle maker says it is the most significant frunk you can find in the EV industry, offering a 400-pound load volume and 14.1 cubic feet of storing area.

The designers have added a lidded bin on the floor to prevent minute things from slipping around. You can approach the frunk through a big gap that contains the vehicle’s “grille,” making liftover effortless. In addition, it is water-resistant with drain plugs on the floor, making cleaning stress-free.

Exterior

Ford decided to offer the Lightning in SuperCrew cab with a 5.5-foot bed configuration only because of the popularity of this setup among customers. The additional cargo area in the frunk fairly refutes the demand for a longer bed.

Lighting is the central aspect of any vehicle, and Ford ensured it stood out with light bars, stretching the truck’s width front and rear, making it appear a little more ultramodern. The headlights and tail lamps come with their unique design, and the exterior lighting encircles the EV. You will also find lights in the frunk and the bed.

The darkened chrome grille (equaling the chrome on the beltline) connects to the hood; they open together as you approach the frunk. The wheels feature an aerodynamic beveled pattern and are available in 18-, 20-, and 22-inch sizes. The EV truck also employs a new, stretched-out, aerodynamic running board, as well as a charging outlet on the front fender.

Interior

The interior looks more futuristic than the exterior boasting the previously mentioned 15.5-inch vertical display available on the Lariat and Platinum instead of the flat 12.0-inch screen we get on select gas-powered F-150s.

That touchscreen will be a part of the package for the entry-level and XLT models of Lightning. It will use an infotainment system we see in the present F-150 instead of the one Ford offers on the Mustang Mach-E. However, it will not abandon any of Sync 4A’s EV planning facilities, nonetheless. All Lightning models will include an all-digital instrument cluster, even the entry-level and commercial variants will use the digital screen.

Production

Ford will create the Lightning from scratch at its electric vehicle production factory at Rouge Complex, near the facility they produce regular F-150 trucks. The Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center should be all-set to manufacture the EV truck by spring this year. Ford has invested $700 million in this facility, which also produces the regular F-series workhorses.

While building the electric facility, Ford made sure to use only ecofriendly and post-consumer items. For instance, the company created the concrete base from destructive things of the vicinity that were there on the land.

In addition, the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center has a heating and ventilation system employing air as the means, curtailing water usage and waste. Other than that, most of the heavy equipment such as forklifts will use hydrogen fuel cells, cutting total development emissions of the truck even further.

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Truck Price

The entry-level 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning will cost you $39,974 minimum, excluding the federal and state reward program. Those who can benefit from the federal and state incentives can buy the base SR variant for around $30,000, which is an excellent trade for an FWD full-size pickup truck.

On the other hand, the flagship Lightning ER Platinum will set you back approximately $90,000, or around $10,000 minus compared to the (allegedly heavy) GMC Hummer EV3X that must hit the road soon, or $10,000 excess than the standard Hummer EV2 coming in 2024.

Tesla’s predicted cost for their pickup truck is more in parallel with the Lightning, starting at $39,900 for the single-motor, rear-drive variant or $49,900 for a dual-motor all-wheel-drive model.

Finally, the tri-motor Cybertruck will cost $69,900. The EV lovers are eagerly waiting for the Cybertruck, though we believe the Lightning will appeal more to new EV owners owing to its popularity and conventional design.

If we analyze the Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck, GMC Hummer EV, and Rivian R1T on paper, we can quickly tell how each EV truck differs from the other. Surprisingly, the 2022 Ford Lightning price not only belittles their rivals as the federal incentives come into play, but it is also lower than the standard ICE F-150.

That said, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning price for the Canadian market would be a lot higher because Ford will not offer the base Pro variant in Canada at the start.

Trim Levels

Ford offers the EV truck in Pro, XLT, Lariat, and Platinum variants, ensuring there is a Lightning for every customer. As mentioned earlier, all models will be accessible in a five-passenger SuperCrew with a 5.5-footbed.

Commercial operators that will switch to Ford’s EV truck would be happy with the lower ownership costs since electric vehicles do not require much maintenance. Furthermore, the family-welcoming features in the XLT would be ideal for typical shoppers seeking an affordable truck. Finally, the Lariat and Platinum models would catch the eye of self-indulgent buyers, likely replacing their posh utility vehicles and sedans with the Lightning.

Availability

The order books of the Ford F-150 Lightning are open now, and we expect the deliveries in May 2022. When Ford opened $100 refundable reservations last year, customers made about 44,500 bookings in less than 48 hours. Due to high demand, unfortunately, not all reservation holders could place an order this year. Ford will contact them in waves and offer them a chance to make an order according to the availability.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Ford covers the F-150 Lightning with a standard warranty and provides an eight-year/100,000-mile policy for EV parts as well. It is what other EV makers offer in the market. As a buyer, you can benefit from:

  • Limited warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty of 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Battery parts warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles
  • No free planned maintenance

They charge what the market will bear. If the consumer has $7500 more, then it will bear $7500 more. Prior to the law, Ford had access to $7,500 in tax credits.
