BMW to Launch 3rd-Gen Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Production in 2028

BMW is preparing to launch a groundbreaking chapter in sustainable mobility as it gears up for series production of fuel cell systems in 2028. Plant Steyr has been chosen as the production hub, while BMW’s competence centers in Munich and Steyr are already working on prototypes to refine performance and efficiency.

The third generation of BMW’s hydrogen fuel cell technology marks a major leap forward. Compared to earlier versions, it is 25% more compact, significantly more powerful, and seamlessly integrates into upcoming vehicle platforms. This innovation will allow BMW to offer customers diverse powertrain options, supporting its vision of a technology-open future.

Key components will be produced at Plant Landshut, where the hydrogen-specific BMW Energy Master will be built to manage energy flow and efficiency. Combined with the Munich prototypes, these advancements are setting the stage for scalable, zero-emission vehicles that still deliver BMW’s signature performance.
